Dog Song For My First Dog

Goto 01NO TIME is a song dedicated to my first dog.  I wrote it shortly after he died in my arms.  It was one of the saddest days I can remember in my life and writing a song about him just seemed like the most natural thing to do in the world.  I couldn´t ask for a better friend and companion.   His name was Goto (from a command in the BASIC programming language) and for such a tiny dog, he sure filled a large part of our lives.

When I was a kid, I always wanted a dog. I pleaded with my mother to get us one but she never gave in.  She had grown up on a farm and felt that a dog needed to have space to run and didn´t belong in the house.  So, as much as that sucked, I didn´t really know what I was missing because I had just never had the “dog experience” and probably would have thought that writing a dog song really wasn´t worth the time.

Nowadays, I would say that anyone who thinks it is strange to dedicate a song to a dog is clearly a great big idiot and has obviously never owned a dog or enjoyed that special bond of trust and respect that comes with it.  Dogs are happy little devoted members of your  “pack” with positive attitudes and come with a loyalty that can make most of your closest human friends look like major jerks by comparison.  In fact, I would say that dogs are one of the few truly worthy subjects I have ever written a song about.

Goto 02Goto wasn´t technically “my” dog….he was actually my wife Elena´s dog.  She got him when he was a puppy and I met him 6 years later, but he was my first dog I ever spent real time with and taught me everything I needed to know about canine awesomeness. My world would never be the same again.

When we were dating, Elena once told me about the time Goto was stolen. It was a heart-wrenching story of how he was taken from a parked car, of weeks of desperate searching and canvasing all the Vet offices in the city, and of finally finding him after over a month of almost no sleep.  She was given the address by a vigilant veterinarian and arrived at the apartment when no one was home.  There was, however, a mail slot in the door and when she called his name, Goto came running right away.  They spent the next 45 min in contact with her fingers being licked and nuzzled through the mail slot until the “new owner” got home.  She was an older woman and had been given the dog by a friend.  She knew right away that she had to give back the dog because she simply couldn´t deny the obvious connection between a girl and her doggie.

Goto 03This story melted my last shreds of doubt and I knew that I had discovered something special. There was an exceedingly touching bond that existed between Elena and Goto that outdistanced any of my previous life knowledge on humans and dogs – which was basically what I had seen in any Disney movie or afterschool special.  This dog had come to her as a puppy and was the great “dog love” of her life.  By the time I arrived on the scene, Goto (a tiny house dog) was more than capable of showing me the ropes and knew his way around everything.  After years of ball throwing and fetching, fluffy toy playing, and constant, good natured companionship, Goto died not long after turning 16 and, once again, my world would never be the same again.

Goto 04NO TIME is Track 8 on the latest Daze of Dawn album SOFA KING COOL and is my song for Goto.  I now have 7 dogs (what!!? You might be asking yourself: “Did I just waste my time reading a story written by a crazy person?”…um…perhaps) and they are all amazing but there will never be another dog quite like Goto. Although NO TIME is a dog song dedicated to his memory, it is really a song about the wonderful life of a girl and her doggie.

Listen to NO TIME

NO TIME

There’s no time for sorry
There’s no time to be sad
Take your time don’t you hurry
It’s the best time that you’ll ever have
Yeah

There’s no time for deception
When you’re lost out in the world
You’ll be safe with no protection
You’ve got the love of that little girl.
Yeah

I feel as though you’re slowly drifting away
I think about you even after you fade away
Yeah yeah yeah

There’s no time for sorrow
He was the best dog in the world
You’ll be fine come tomorrow
Just like when you were a little girl
Yeah

I feel as though you’re slowly drifting away
I think about you even after you fade away
yeah yeah yeah

I feel as though you’re slowly drifting away
I think about you even after you fade away
I dream about you just to fill out the day
I think about you even after you fade away
yeah yeah yeah
